JEE Advanced 2026 Paper Analysis — Difficulty Level, Expected Cutoff and What Future IIT Aspirants Must Know

Every year, the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced stands as India’s most challenging engineering entrance test — and the 2026 edition was no exception. Conducted by IIT Roorkee on May 17, the examination was attempted by over 1.8 lakh students across 221 cities in India and two international centres. For those who aim to join the elite IITs in 2027 and 2028, understanding this year’s pattern is essential strategic intelligence.

How Difficult Was the Paper?

Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 were rated moderate to difficult by leading coaching institutes. Mathematics in Paper 1 drew the most complaints — heavy on calculations and lengthy derivations that tested both speed and depth. Physics in Paper 2 emerged as the toughest section overall, with problems demanding multi-concept application rather than straight formula use. Chemistry remained relatively accessible, sitting in the moderate range and offering students a chance to recover marks.

Expected Cutoff Ranges

Based on difficulty analysis and historical trends from 2023-2025, experts estimate the General Category qualifying cutoff to land between 95 and 105 marks out of 360. For the Common Rank List, the opening cutoff is projected around 135-150 marks. IIT Roorkee will release official results on June 1, 2026, along with final cutoffs.

What 2027 and 2028 Aspirants Should Learn

The message from this year’s paper is clear: rote formulae will not carry you into the IITs. The questions demanded conceptual clarity, quick adaptability, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Future aspirants should start building their problem-solving muscle early — focusing on Physics mechanics and electrodynamics, Mathematics calculus and algebra, and Chemistry organic reactions from the very beginning of their preparation.
